CEAC - Buckinghamshire and Berkshire

Local Recycle Success

Some 400 million tonnes of waste are produced in the UK each year and of this, a large proportion is still sent to landfill sites. Now a handful of local businesses have demonstrated that managing waste proactively can send recycling rates soaring, and save money.

CEAC (the Corporate Environmental Advisory Service) has been offering environmental support to businesses in the area for a number of years and the Centre has just completed a two-year recycling project with businesses. The project called Recycle Resources, aimed to assist companies to increase recycling and comply with waste legislation. Grantscape, an environmental grant making charity funded the project, with support from Buckinghamshire County Council and Aylesbury Vale District Council.

Businesses received a waste assessment and tailored training to develop the required skills. Participating businesses were able to implement improvements to legislative compliance and increased their average recycling rate to 80%.

Overall it is estimated that 281 tonnes of waste were diverted from landfill. The total potential savings from changes to waste management contracts was estimated at £30,000. The actual saving achieved during the project was £9000. In addition nearly 100 business representatives received training on waste legislation and waste minimisation. Marylene Mansfield-Williams managed the project and says ‘Waste management and recycling is not usually a core business issue for the majority of companies, but this project demonstrates that active management of waste can bring a range of benefits.’ For case studies of participating businesses click here. Rotary Bucks, Beds & Herts Environment Awards Open for Applications

Rotary is again organising the Environment Awards in Beds, Herts & Bucks in 2006 and welcomes entries from the business community in the three counties. Entering is easy - there is no need for a 200 page submissions! All that is required is a short summary on a couple of sides of A4. Although prizes are modest in business terms (£200) but there is good publicity to be had for the winners and it's a good way to encourage other businesses to take the environment seriously. Winners from Bucks also have the opportunity to apply for the prestigiuos SEEDA Sustainable Business Awards later in the year. The Awards Day will be held in June with David Bellamy in attendance as usual. The theme for the day will be waste and recycling. The closing date for entries is end of March 2006. Further details are on their website.

CEAC Business Recycling Guide Published

We have just published ‘Recycle Resources - A Guide to Recycling in Business’. The guide aims to draw together the main ideas on how to recycle more in business. It is based on guidance published by government programmes and our own experiences in working with local companies. For example, it shows you how to calculate your recycling rate and how to identify contractors.

The guide is available in hard copy and in the Resources section of this website. To request a free copy please send us an e-mail giving your full postal details and stating how many copies you would like. Get recycling!
