EuP-directive, Ecodesign of Energy using Products, opportunities and challenges
  • Anna Karin Jönbrink
  • IVF Industrial Research and Development Corporation
2
EuP directive (2005/32/EC)
  • Directive 2005/32/EC of the european parliament and of the council
    of 6 July 2005
  • Establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-using products and amending Council directive 92/57/EC and 2000/55/EC of the Euoropean Parliament and of the Council
3
Ecodesign and Life Cycle Thinking
4
Functional unit
  • Ask: What is the function the product shall fulfil?
    • Pen:
Write 10m lines a day over five years
    • Car:
      Transport 4 persons 200 000 km over 10 years
    • Radio base station:
Transmit and receive communication to and from mobile phones at a certain traffic load, in a certain geographic area for 10 years

To do Ecodesign is to save money!
  • Ecodesign often means
    • Less material
    • Less energy
  • Using less saves money!
    • In production phase - save money for you
    • In Use phase – save money for the user => They are willing to pay more!?
  • Teach your customers how to calculate Life Cycle Cost
    • It is not only the purchase price which is important, but also the use cost

EuP Directive
Energy-using products including
  • Products using energy during the use phase of the life cycle
  • Not transports
  • Significant volumes within the european union
    • Product groups of at least 200 000 pieces a year
  • Significant environmental impact
  • Significant potential for improvement

EuP Ecodesign Study, Lot 3 Computers and Monitors
  • Anna Karin Jönbrink

12
Product category
  • Computers
    • Desktops
    • Laptops
  • Monitors
    • LCD
    • CRT

  • For future products and technologies
    • Possibly other related products
13
Computers and monitors
  • New models quite often
  • Environmental impact
    • Materials
    • Production
    • Transports
    • Use
    • End of life
  • Can also have a big influence of environmental impact of other products and systems
    • Transport logistics
    • Energy systems
    • …
  • This is a big and complex group of products.
    • focus on the important things (Art. 15, 4. (a) of 2005/32/EC)

Stakeholder involvement
  • Website
  • Workshop

  • All interested stakeholders welcome to contribute!

16
Workshops
  • Every lot may invite the stakeholders to workshops. The workshops must be open to every interested stakeholder.
  • Object of the workshop is to
    • Give stakeholders opportunities to give their view and to include them in the study and in the final report.
    • Use the stakeholders to get data for the study
17
Website
  • All lots must start up a website for their projects, which will be linked to the overall website at the Commission.
  • They will reflect the progress of work and give a picture of the project to the stakeholders
  • Results from sub-steps (VHK-method) will be published
  • Invitations to workshops will be published
  • Our website www.ecocomputer.org
  • You can register at the website to get more information about the project

What should a company do?
  • Start learning Ecodesign
    • Focus on energy use
  • Tell the customers how much they can save when using energy efficient products (LCC)!
  • Keep your eye on the preparatory studies close to your products
23
Good luck with Ecodesign!
