seeba Workshop and Conference Programme

List of companies that have attended previous workshops and conferences

Introduction

seeba is well known for its highly informative "legislative update" workshops, as well as hands-on its practitioner update workshops and annual conferences. We utilise high quality experts from within industry itself, as well as policy-makers from government, regulators and legal / technical experts.

Workshops cover legislative updates on 'producer responsibility' issues in the electronics sector, and also practical sessions focusing on eco-design as well as the practicalities of implementing producer responsibility.

Half day legislative update workshops are generally timed to take place between 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and normally take place at the home of the Centre for Sustainable Design, which is based at the Farnham Campus of the University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester.

Full day workshops and the annual conference are often held at other locations and normally take place between 9.30am and 4.30pm Over 460 organisations have attended the 100+ seminars, conferences and training courses organised by the Centre and its networks.

There is excellent access to Farnham: by train - approximately 50 minutes from Waterloo; by road there is good access via the A3 and M3; by air both Gatwick and Heathrow are an estimated 60-minute taxi journey away. Details

Legislation Update

Legislation Workshop. Afternoon 15th September 2006 - Details
Keep up to date with the ever increasing amount of environmement product legislation that is now emerging from many countries. Knowing and preparing for this legislation has become a essential requirement for those companies selling products globally. Failure to abide by country requirements can result in companies not being able to place their products on the market and facing the risk of heavy fines or prison sentances. In China for instance all products falling under the scope of the 'Management Methods for Controlling Pollution by Electronic Information Products' will have to have labels showing hazardous material content, safe working life and recyclability.

For this Workshop we are lucky to have 2 leading guest speakers. Anna-Karin Jönbrink from IVF, Sweden is leading the EuP preparatory studies team for the EU Commission on PCs, and this will be a golden opportunity to find out the latest developments on the EuP. Our other speaker is Chris Robertson of ERA Technologies. His company has been doing a lot of work for both the Dti and the EU Commission for the RoHS directive. He will be covering the latest updates on the WEEE and RoHS, including the work done on demonstrating due diligence.

Ecolife 2 Dissemination Workshop - Free!!

Ecolife 2 Workshop. Morning 15th September 2006 - Details
Industry has to deal with lots of challenges day by day: on the one hand arising directives within Europe create a new framework of laws. WEEE, RoHS, EuP and REACH will change the market situation in Europe totally. On the other hand global competition requires new ideas to survive or even gain market share in this dynamic market. This workshop will provide you with a deeper knowledge of

  • state-of-the-art eco-design of electrical and electronic products and components that meet all new legislations as well as
  • added-value services that guarantee your success against production centres in low-cost countries.

Strengthen your market - position with the knowledge generated at the workshop.

Discover how to meet the challenges of the fastest growing market!

ECOLIFE II focuses on the product-service lifecycle of electr(on)ic products, and involves key players in the electronics and automotive industries among the various stages of the product-service lifecycle – from component suppliers and product manufacturers, to service and logistic suppliers and the End-of-Life processors. The main activities of the Network focus on the environmental and economic aspects of product design, functional innovation and service-system innovation.

The ECOLIFE II consortium has 27 partners, of which 17 are companies and 10 research organisations. The partners come from 10 countries - 9 EU Member States and 1 associated country. They play leading roles in, European and national branch organisations, international standardisation bodies as well as other networks.

Sustainable Innovation 06: Global challenges, issues and solutions.
23rd– 24th October 2006.

The new business model means that design, assembly, manufacturing and consumption are now often geographically disparate within long and complex value chains. This change has dramatic implications for the creation and development of future products and services. Such restructuring and the economic rise of China and India is leading to increasing interest in Sustainable Consumption and Production - with an emerging issue being the need to improve understanding of consumers and users behaviour and their relationship to products and services. In addition, climate change and the need for new low carbon solutions - to reduce carbon dioxide emissions - is now taking centre stage with growing acceptance of the uncertainty surrounding global weather patterns. However, most product-related sustainability improvements are incremental or based on re-design with little radical innovation focused on significant reduction in materials and energy use throughout the lifecycle. In addition, where sustainable product design and development (SPDD) happens it tends to focus on environmental aspects with social considerations largely ignored. SPDD tends to be practised by advanced, transnational companies with little penetration amongst small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A major opportunity to accelerate sustainable innovation is emerging with the growing interest in South-East Asia, Europe and North America in the use of public procurement as a tool to drive improved environmental and social performance of product and services.

Sustainable Innovation 06 will provide a platform to discuss global challenges and opportunities for sustainable product/service development and design. It will highlight best practice and provide a range of case studies and examples. Sustainable Innovation 06 will include invited and refereed papers covering sustainable product/service development and design from academics, consultants, product designers and design engineers, sustainability, environment and CSR managers and other business functions.

Location: Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. USA
