Information

Cleantech

Cleantech¹ is a term that has originated in the USA , especially in California . The Cleantech Venture Network (CVN) defines² cleantech as the use of new, innovative³ technology to create products and services that compete favourably on price and performance while reducing environmental impacts compared to traditional technologies.

Cleantech is often used to describe a broad asset class or types of company for investment purposes. ‘Environmental technology' or ‘clean technology' are more commonly used to describe the actual technologies involved.

Cleantech includes a broad range of products and services. The ten cleantech categories, as defined by CVN are:

•  Agriculture and nutrition (e.g. bio based materials, farming efficiency, natural pesticides)

•  Air quality

•  Enabling technologies (e.g. energy, water)

•  Environmental IT (e.g. use of IT to enhance energy/resource efficiency)

•  Material and nano-technology, including biomaterials

•  Energy-tech (energy-related generation, storage, efficiency and infrastructure);

•  Materials recovery and recycling

•  Manufacturing/industrial

•  Transportation & logistics (e.g. fuel cells, electric/hybrid vehicles, fleet tracking systems)

•  Water purification & management (e.g. recycling, filtration, desalinisation)

1 . There is no established spelling of cleantech, sometimes spelt as ‘clean tech' or ‘clean technology'.

2. There is no established definition of what technologies are covered by cleantech. They include environmental technologies whose primary function is to perform a specific environmental service. They may include technologies performing other primary functions but having significant environmental benefits.

3. Not all ‘clean' or environmental technologies are necessarily innovative in the sense of being new technologies. Many have been around for some time without being widely adopted. Market success may nevertheless trigger further innovation.
