Smart eco-Design for Electronics
2nd-3rd June 2008
The University College for the Creative Arts
Farnham

Organised by: The Centre for Sustainable Design
A training course to help companies prepare for the challenge of Environmentally Conscious Design (Eco-design) of electrical and electronic components, products and systems
Background
Due to the increased global concern over environmental issues, electronic designers, manufacturers, assemblers and ‘systems integrators’ are faced with challenge of meeting new customer expectations and also new regulations affecting the design, manufacture, use and disposal of their products. With the WEEE and RoHS Directives already impacting heavily on businesses, the sector needs to understand how best to respond to increasing market and legislative pressures for improved Eco-design, as evidenced by the EuP and REACH Directives and the global competitive pressures from countries like Japan and to capitalise on the opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency gains and improvements in product quality and marketability that Eco-design affords.
Why you should attend
The ability to adapt and react quickly to changing requirements will become an increasingly important asset. This will mean a growing need to develop in-house Eco-design capabilities and to organise, manage and implement environmentally conscious supply chain and 'end of life' management systems. The course provides a fast-track to a basic understanding of the technical and management issues and overall business impacts of Eco-design including the design, supply chain and 'end of life' aspects. Delegates will gain greater awareness of the business impacts of Eco-design and increased knowledge and competence in how to develop more environmental friendly products, services and systems. The course is designed and delivered by experienced trainers who can bring a wealth of industrial, engineering and management experience alongside their environmental credentials. Training materials are constantly updated ensuring that they are up to date, cutting edge and tuned to the needs of industry.
Who should attend?
Designers, engineers, technical or design managers, marketing, purchasing and business managers, quality assurance personnel from companies that design, manufacture, assemble or integrate electrical or electronic components, products and systems. The course has been designed so that the first day covers the “Why do it?” questions and the impact on business processes, while the second covers the “How to do it?” processes and focuses on design. This means that non-technical managers can attend on the first day only and gain an appropriate level of understanding, while technical personnel can attend both days.
Benefits of Attending
- All delegates will be able to fully assess the significance of Eco-design to their operations and products in terms of market and legislative drivers and risks
- Managers will be better able to judge to what extent they should adopt Eco-design principles and measures over and above those required by law
- Designers will be able to identify early stage indicators of likely mandatory design requirements and also gain an understanding of the design implications of undertaking life cycle based environmental impact improvement measures beyond those required by law
- Designers will gain an understanding of how to work the process of Eco-design using tools provided
- Managers will be able to assess the resources and efforts needed to implement the necessary design measures and also identify and manage the supply chain and 'end of life' impacts arising from these.
- Delegates will see the extent to which product cost savings can result from Eco-design.
- Delegates will gain an insight into the opportunities for product and business innovation arising from Eco-design.
